Oversize transport Poland – Romania

Poland is an important source of steel structures, machinery and rolling stock for projects in Romania. We organise oversize transport in both directions, with the Polish permit in the right category, the pilot vehicle required by the dimensions and the permits for Slovakia and Hungary.

What we transport between Poland and Romania

On the Poland – Romania route we often transport:

  • steel structures and building elements;
  • construction and agricultural machinery;
  • rolling stock: railcars, trams and railway components;
  • industrial and power equipment;
  • containers, modules and technical cabins.

Permits in Poland

Poland divides permits for non-standard vehicles (“zezwolenie na przejazd pojazdu nienormatywnego”) into seven categories. The first categories cover smaller excesses and are issued for periods of time. Category VII is for transports that travel only on the route in the permit and is usually issued by GDDKiA (the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways).

For category VII, GDDKiA sets the route together with the other road administrators and only then issues the permit, so the timing must be planned in advance.

Pilot vehicles

The transport must be piloted by a licensed pilot if it exceeds 23 m in length, 3.2 m in width or 4.5 m in height, or if it weighs over 60 t. The pilot supervises the movement, controls the stops and, when needed, directs traffic. In certain situations, the permit requires a police escort.

The route to Romania

From Romania, the route usually goes through Hungary and Slovakia. Poland has driving restrictions for heavy trucks on public holidays and, in summer, at weekends, which we take into account when setting the departure date.

What to send us for a quote

Within the European Union there are no customs formalities, but every country on the route requires its own oversize transport permit.

  • the dimensions and weight of the load, from the data sheet;
  • the exact loading and unloading addresses;
  • the preferred date and how flexible it is;
  • who handles the loading and unloading (crane, ramp);
  • the delivery terms (Incoterms), if you know them;
  • a photo or a drawing of the cargo.

Questions about oversize transport in Poland

Which permit category do I need in Poland?

It depends on the dimensions, the weight and the roads used. Large transports travelling on a fixed route need category VII. We determine the category once we have the exact dimensions and weight.

When is a pilot vehicle needed in Poland?

Over 23 m in length, 3.2 m in width or 4.5 m in height, or over 60 t gross weight. The pilot supervises and, where necessary, directs traffic.

Can you transport railcars or trams from Poland?

Yes, on trailers suitable for rolling stock. See also the page about railcar, locomotive and tram transport.

Do you have an oversize transport from or to Poland?

Tell us what we are moving, from where and to where. We send you a quote with the route, the permits from each country and a realistic timeline, for most requests in under 30 minutes during office hours.
