Oversize transport France – Romania
From France we bring agricultural and construction machinery, industrial equipment and structures to Romania, and in the opposite direction we deliver equipment made in Romania. France has one of the clearest classification systems for abnormal loads in Europe, and the category the transport falls into decides the permit and the escort.

What we transport between France and Romania
Most requests for France are agricultural and construction machinery bought from dealers, but also equipment for factories.
- agricultural machinery: combines, tractors, seed drills and harvesting machinery;
- construction and drilling machinery;
- industrial equipment and machine tools;
- steel structures and precast elements;
- energy components;
- in the opposite direction, equipment and structures from Romania.
The three categories of abnormal load transport
France regulates abnormal load transport by an order of 4 May 2006 and divides it into three categories, according to the length, width and weight of the convoy. The largest characteristic is what counts: a convoy can fall into the second category because of its weight alone, even if its dimensions would fit the first.
| Category | Length | Width | Gross weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category 1 | up to 20 m | up to 3 m | up to 48 t |
| Category 2 | up to 25 m | up to 4 m | up to 72 t |
| Category 3 | over 25 m | over 4 m | over 72 t |
Example: a machine carried on a convoy 17 m long, 3.5 m wide and 54 t falls into the second category.
The permit and the escort
The permit is individual and named, and is issued by the prefecture according to the category of the transport. For larger convoys, the permit requires one or more pilot cars, and in the third category, for very wide or very long convoys, also a motorised guidance escort.
The route to Romania
The usual route goes through Germany, Austria and Hungary. Alpine crossings to Italy have their own restrictions for large transports, so the route through Germany is usually simpler to authorise. Each transit country requires its own permit, and the departure date is set by the permit that comes last.
What to send us for a quote
Within the European Union there are no customs formalities, but every country on the route requires its own oversize transport permit.
- the dimensions and weight of the load, from the data sheet;
- the exact loading and unloading addresses;
- the preferred date and how flexible it is;
- who handles the loading and unloading (crane, ramp);
- the delivery terms (Incoterms), if you know them;
- a photo or a drawing of the cargo.

Questions about oversize transport in France
Which category does my transport fall into in France?
The length, width and weight of the convoy are compared with the thresholds of the three categories, and the category is given by the highest value. For example, at 17 m length, 3.5 m width and 54 t, the transport falls into the second category because of its width and weight.
Who issues the permit in France?
The prefecture, through an individual, named permit that specifies the route and the travel conditions for the category in question.
Can you transport agricultural machinery from France?
Yes. With combines, the header is usually transported separately, so that the width stays as small as possible. See also the page about agricultural machinery transport.
