Oversize sea freight: breakbulk, RO-RO and flat rack

For equipment coming from overseas or from distant ports, the journey starts at sea. We organise the sea freight of oversize and heavy loads, the port operations and the road transport to the destination, with a single coordinator for the whole chain.

Which type of sea freight

  • Breakbulk

    Pieces loaded directly into the hold or on deck, with the port's or the ship's cranes. The usual option for large, heavy equipment that does not fit in containers.

  • Heavy lift

    Ships with their own high-capacity cranes, for very heavy pieces, including in ports without suitable cranes.

  • RO-RO

    Loads on wheels or on trailers drive onto the ship up a ramp: self-propelled machines, vehicles, pieces placed on port trailers.

  • Flat rack and open top

    Special containers for pieces too wide or too tall for standard containers, carried on container ships.

Port of Constanța

Constanța is Romania's main seaport and the starting point for many oversize road transports. CNAIR announcements regularly show transports setting off from the RO-RO terminal at Agigea: components for wind farms, equipment for the Mintia power plant or equipment continuing to Ukraine.

Through the Danube–Black Sea Canal, Constanța is also connected to the Danube, so a piece unloaded from a ship can continue by barge. See river transport.

Documents for sea freight

In addition to the road transport documents, sea freight has its own documents. We prepare them together, so that the ship, the port and customs all have the same data.

  • the bill of lading;
  • the commercial invoice and the packing list, with dimensions and weights;
  • the customs declarations, for goods from outside the EU;
  • the lifting and lashing plan, for heavy pieces;
  • cargo insurance for the sea leg.

Frequently asked questions

What is breakbulk?

The sea transport of pieces that do not fit in containers and are loaded directly into the hold or on deck, with cranes. It is the usual option for large, heavy equipment.

When should I choose flat rack instead of breakbulk?

When the piece exceeds a standard container but fits on a flat rack and the shipping line accepts it. For very large or very heavy pieces, breakbulk is usually the only option.
